How to ban someone from a Rust server
Type banid with their Steam ID. Put the name and the reason in double quotes.
banid THEIR_STEAM_ID "PlayerName" "Cheating"Or let Claude Code do it
Ban a player on my Rust server.
Player: Steam ID THEIR_STEAM_ID, name PlayerName, reason Cheating.
My server: address YOUR_SERVER_IP, RCON port YOUR_RCON_PORT. The RCON password is in the environment variable RCON_PASSWORD. Never print it, and never save it in a file.
Rust uses web RCON: open a websocket to ws://ADDRESS:PORT/PASSWORD and send JSON like {"Identifier": 1, "Message": "the command", "Name": "WebRcon"}. The answer comes back with the same Identifier, in "Message".
1. Send: banid THEIR_STEAM_ID "PlayerName" "Cheating"
2. Send: banlistex
3. Show me the line with that Steam ID.
Never use unbanid. To lift a ban later, the command is unban. How do I ban someone who is online?
Use ban with their name. For someone offline, use banid with their Steam ID.
ban "PlayerName" "Cheating"How do I unban someone?
Use unban with their Steam ID. Do not use unbanid: it answers as if it worked and leaves the ban in place.
unban THEIR_STEAM_IDHow do I see every ban?
banlistex lists each ban with name and reason. -1 at the end means it never expires.
banlistexWhy did only the first word of the reason stay?
Words with spaces need double quotes. Without them the name and the reason keep only one word each.
How do I kick or mute someone?
kick throws them off, and they can join again. mute stops them writing in chat until you unmute them.
kick "PlayerName" "reason"mute "PlayerName"unmute "PlayerName"Where are bans saved?
In bans.cfg, next to users.cfg in your server's cfg folder.
Coming soon: in Rust On Top's admin console every ban made there names who made it and why.
See the consoleChecked on 7 October 2026 against Rust's October update, on our own server.
